Barging Europe

Dreaming of a different vacation this year has brought me to the conclusion of only two types of travel that might be more fun then any other this year, they are barging or canal cruising on your own Penichette.

A client asked me about doing a holiday cruising the canals and waterways on their own without the rush of a tour, staff, organized events or anything other then their own pace, well that's when you need to consider a "licence free hiring" holiday on a Penichette. A personal size boat that can accommodate 2 to 8 guests, you are the captain and chief bottle washer, the dock master and the safety officer. Sounds fun if your into adventures in Europe with your best friends, family or even a class mate reunion.

What is a Penichette, it is a generic name for a canal boat or river boat, it is in fact trademarked by a company called Locaboats and is their name of their boats. We love this concept with one or two exceptions, for our team we are a little picky and need some special amenities that are all possible on a Penichette, if your willing to pay a little more for a larger vessel.

One requirement for my team of travelers is en-suite facilities, this is available even on the Eupopa 400 that sleep 4, 600 that sleeps 6 as well -- some have en suite facilities and some don't depending on the model. This is a big selling point for our team and we often encourage you to consider the better of the boats for privacy and continued personal space. These boats are compact, do you remember the days of the motor home, compact, efficient and useful in many ways, from the table turning into a bed to beds dropping down over the drivers area. It's the same concept, only nicer and with a calm relaxing cruise speed down the rivers or canals, through the locks makes this the ultimate experience.

Most popular cruise - The Canal du Midi, "world's heritage site" nominated by Unesco for it's 17th century monument of industrial archaeology. Trips can stretch from 7 to 21 days depending on your time available.

The highlight of these canal and river boating experiences is the locks, where you will be very comfortable navigating the locks while visiting with locals along the lock walls, some stretches of waterways have up to 110 locks, some 50 plus -- this is a social as well as entertaining part of your journey.

Mooring up at night time in a local village, along a quiet inlet, enjoy a nice dinner on the deck, relax and star gaze for hours on end -- no TV's, but a little soft on-board music might be in order for the evening before retiring to your well equipped cabin.

Next morning, it's breakfast on the river before you take on the next village, stop or set of locks - this vacation will be one to bring you back for more and more.
